From soaring wealth gaps to shrinking civic space, inequality is fueling unrest, weakening democracy, and threatening global progress. As conflicts escalate and trust in governments erodes, the need for action to reduce inequality has never been more urgent. That’s why, at the 2025 Hamburg Sustainability Conference, world leaders and civil society champions launched a bold new international effort: the Global Alliance Against Inequality. Its aim? To turn the tide and tackle disparities in income, wealth, and opportunity. Backed by governments and global organizations, the Alliance is already making waves. Here are six reasons why this initiative is critical to tackling inequality:

1. It’s taking aim at one of the defining challenges of our time

Inequality—within and between countries—is undermining progress on everything from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to democratic trust. In recent years, we have also witnessed a notable surge in inequality, polarization, and the proliferation of divisive narratives, with inequality at the center. Disparities in income, access, and opportunity are not only unjust—they are actively destabilizing societies by fueling unrest, eroding institutional trust, and weakening social cohesion. The Global Alliance Against Inequality brings this urgent issue to the forefront of international action and political will to strengthen democracy, uphold human rights, and foster peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.

2. It’s powered by a diverse global coalition

The governments of Czechia, Germany, Norway, and Sierra Leone have joined forces, supported by Oxfam International and the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies at NYU’s Center on International Cooperation (CIC)—a powerful show of unity across regions and sectors.

3. It’s rooted in real-world solutions

At the launch of the Alliance, Sierra Leone announced it is already taking action by investing in free education, school meals, cash transfers, and healthcare to support its most vulnerable citizens, showing how inequality can be tackled head-on. Building on the Pathfinders’ Inequality Solutions Portal—an invaluable tool to amplify practical solutions for change—the Alliance is spotlighting tangible, proven policies that reduce inequality and urging others to follow suit.

4. It’s not just talk—It’s about action

Launched alongside a bold joint declaration, the Alliance is calling for coordinated political leadership and inclusive policy solutions. This is not about rhetoric—it’s about delivering meaningful, measurable change.

5. It’s building momentum at a pivotal moment

With major global meetings on the horizon—from the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development to the 2025 UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, and the UN General Assembly’s High-level Week—the Alliance has a timely platform to grow its influence and shape global dialogue and policy. More governments and partners are expected to join in the months ahead.

6. It offers a message of hope and solidarity

“Inequality is not an inevitable reality,” said Fernando Marani of NYU’s Center on International Cooperation at the launch of the Alliance. This initiative is about rewriting the narrative—through solidarity, courage, and collective action—to build a world that works for the many, not just the privileged few.
