Organized by the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding (CSPPS) and the Voices of SDG16+ campaign partners, this was a virtual side-event following the sixth edition of the 2024 Voices of SDG16+: Stories for Global Action video campaign.
This side event served as a Preparatory Meeting for the 2025 World Congress on Justice With Children, and informs the Committee on the Rights of the Child’s General Comment No. 27 on children’s rights to access to justice and effective remedies.
This event reflected on the most updated figures, contexts, and inspiring practices around SDG localization; and the key messages and recommendations targeting international stakeholders, national governments, and other actors for accelerating SDG localization globally. Join Pathfinders Assistant Director, SDG16+, Margaret Williams, for her remarks on advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies at local and regional levels.
Pathfinders Program Director, Justice for All, Swati Mehta, spoke at this high-level panel which considered the following questions: What measures are needed for building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels? How can we strengthen cooperation and partnerships for peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development and provide access to justice for all?
This Lab unpacked the VNR as an important tool to support action on SDG16. Organized by the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, UNDP, and OHCHR, and in partnership with IDLO and International IDEA, this VNR Lab examined how countries and partners have used the VNR process (pre- and post-HLPF) to advance SDG16 at national and sub-national levels; to reinforce/scale its interlinkages across the SDGs, and to highlight its role in strengthening resilience for future crises.
Designed as an intergenerational dialogue between the Young Justice Leaders and senior leaders within the multilateral and justice sectors, the event explored meaningful ways for young people to contribute to SDG 16.3 while officially launching the new cohort of Young Justice Leaders on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2024.
This event fostered reflection on lessons from security sector reform and justice reform which are of relevance to the broader discussions of member states in the run up to the Summit of the Future and the adoption of the Pact for the Future. Nicola Browne, a fellow with the NYU Center on International Cooperation as part of a partnership with the London School of Economics' Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity discussed learnings from Northern Ireland—focusing on inequality and exclusion, narrative, and building sustainable peace.
Margaret Williams, Associate Director, SDG16+ spoke at the #SDG16Now marquee side event to explore the underpinning and enabling role of SDG16+ in achieving the 2030 Agenda at large and to identify priorities across the campaign’s five themes (Peace, Justice, Inclusion, Institutions, and Interlinkages & Financing). The event features speakers from across the #SDG16Now Campaign’s leadership, as well as from Member States, the UN system and other key champions of SDG16+. These discussions will showcase encouraging examples of SDG16+ action on many fronts, and will look towards important opportunities for mobilization ahead, including the upcoming Summit of the Future and other key moments like the Financing for Development Conference and World Social Summit in 2025.
Roshni Menon, Senior Program Officer, Pathfinders spoke at this side event bringing together senior government officials, representatives from intergovernmental organizations, civil society and academia to unpack the consequences of inequality in relation to the SDGs in review this year. Regional stakeholders will also be invited to share their views about how the Pact for the Future may support the acceleration of the SDGs and future development agendas. The event, convened by Oxfam International and the Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN), will conclude with a clear set of recommendations, emerging emerging from the discussions, for governments, multilateral institutions, private sector and global citizens to fight inequality to achieve the Agenda 2030 as Member States conclude their negotiations of the Pact for the Future to be adopted in September.
Margaret Williams, SDG16+ Associate Director at the Pathfinders will speak at this informal discussion among development experts within Member States, the UN and civil society on the ways in which various stakeholders operationalise SDGs and identify ways in which the global policy processes can support SDG localisation efforts. The goal of the discussion is to identify concrete entry points in global policy to support localisation needs of governments and the people.
Ambassador Martin Kimani, Executive Director at the NYU Center on International Cooperation will moderate this panel, hosted by the US to showcase their strategic support for United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16—to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels—as a critical foundation to strengthen democracy and economic prosperity at home and abroad.
Join us for a high-level discussion on the sidelines of the 2024 High-Level Political Forum, hosted by Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies and supported by the governments of Bangladesh, Canada, and Czechia. This gathering will bring stakeholders from various sectors together to address polarization and fragmentation—and foster a policy framework to reduce societal divisions and community vulnerabilities.
Roshni Menon, Senior Program Officer joined a panel discussion during this side event organized by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to bring forward the theme of “Strengthening Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for Development: Towards a Transformative Change” and will specifically delve into the topics of transformative solutions in: 1) South-South Cooperation to narrow the gap between the Global North and South; 2) innovative financing; 3) sustainable economy, particularly on sustainable trade.
