The Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) are convening the SDG 16 Conference 2025, on Monday, 12 May 2025 at the UN Headquarters in New York, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The SDG 16 Conference 2025 will bring together representatives of governments, international organizations, civil society, academia, women, youth and other key stakeholders. In the context of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and building on the outcomes of the previous five editions, the Conference will provide a platform for showcasing tangible examples of how investing in SDG 16 delivers measurable, practical dividends for governments and people, enabling them to efficiently achieve their development priorities. The Pact for the Future, adopted at the Summit of the Future in 2024, emphasizes the importance of strengthening efforts to build peaceful, just, and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels, while 1 upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms, as outlined in Action 7. This year’s Conference will help identify priorities for action while reflecting on how relevant elements of SDG 16, including peace, justice, and strong institutions, can contribute to advancing progress on these key objectives. The Conference will also aim to bring insights into key intergovernmental events to be held in 2025, the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in June-July, the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the Food Systems Summit Stocktaking Moment in July, and the World Summit for Social Development in November.
During the conference, Justice Action Coalition made a statement, presented by Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Bahia Tahzib-Lie. Maggie Williams, our Associate Director of SDG16+, also spoke on a panel to discuss the business case for investment in peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.
