UN Headquarters, Conference Room 11

In December 2023, the United Nations adopted the Global Framework for Through-Life Conventional Ammunition Management, marking a critical milestone in international arms control. Among its key objectives are Objective 14, which calls for the strengthening of gender mainstreaming and the full, equal, meaningful and effective participation of women, and Objective 15, which emphasizes cooperation with relevant stakeholders, including civil society, academia, and industry.

These objectives present a vital opportunity to ensure that the humanitarian, security, and development impacts of poor ammunition management are addressed in inclusive and sustainable ways. However, the language of global policy frameworks can be difficult to navigate for local and national civil society organizations (CSOs) and other non-governmental stakeholders.

To address this gap, GENSAC has developed a practical guide that focuses on Objectives 14 and 15, as well as other parts of the GFA that focus on gender and multi-stakeholder cooperation, and outlines concrete opportunities for action by CSOs and other partners. This side-event will launch the guide and open a dialogue with stakeholders on how to leverage the guide to support gender-responsive, inclusive ammunition management efforts.
